The Government feels that the trip will be a sure success since they are familiar with each
other. Dr. Sharon Behrens Schweitzer Jr., widow of the late Dr. Schweitzer the famous surgeon,
will be in charge of the health and safety measures on the trip. She will be constantly checking
the health of the members of the expedition and will aid them in sickness.
To keep the group active, and in good sĀ·pirits, Ronald Gustafson, famous for being named
"Rookie of the Year" in the American Basketball Association and now a renowned high school
coach, will be the recreation and social director during the flight and after arrival,
Those in charge of transportation and construction of living quarters after landing are: Keith
Pulse, a now famous heavy equipment operator who recently gained renown on the Government's
"Dig Thru to China" operation; Mickey Pulse, the famous race car driver who bas been the first
to master the operation of the new Mars Cars; Robert F. Hannan, architect and designer of the
house which was selected as the most practical for adaption to Mars; Charles Warner who recently
was acclaimed for his stand against telephone poles in a live T.V. debate; and Terry Swanson,
a test driver who has withstood harder crushes than any of the other astronauts.
The woman in charge of keeping the records, books, and setting up land offices on Mars is Mrs.
Dianne Pellan Hannan wife of the humorist and cartoonist Richard S. Hannan who will accompany
his wife, named Secretary of the Year in 1967, on the trip. He calls his duties that of a house
husband but he will assist "Gus" in maintaining morale and he will also help publish the news-
paper (in charge of the funny page).
The two men who will be in charge of keeping the group fed will be the two renowned farmers
Mark Gustafson, the man who raised the biggest ear of corn in 1970 and who has done research
with the conditions he'll face on Mars, and Mike Iiams, the man who in 1969 raised the largest
bull on record and who invented the tractor which will be used on the planet.
Miss Ann English, spinster old maid and missionary teacher, will serve as Chaplain for the
party and will be prepared to win over any natives that may be found to reside on the sphere.
Mr. Ralph McClay will be in charge of educating any natives found and if none are found he will
write for the newspaper and prepare to teach any "new arrivals" which we are sure will follow.
In all, the problems are being worked out and it appears that the fifteen will be launched in
less than three months.
