                                         Originally a humanitarian mission, the United States'
                                         involvement  in  Somalia  increasingly  became  more
                                         combative.  In  capturing  three  Somali  aides,  17  U.S.
                                         soldiers  were  killed,  77  were  injured  and  one,  heli·
                                         copter pilot  Michael  Durant,  was  captured  and  later
                                         released.  President Bill Clinton kept his promise that
                                         all American troops were to be removed by March 3!.
