DISTRICT D-1 CHAMPIONS-STATE D-1
The Mead Raiders Football team hit the lowest low and the highest high
during the 1987 season. The Raide s had to overcome more than the
opponents they played; they had to vercome the loss of a teammate.
The Raiders came into the season ith the rating of fifth in class D-1 .
With the loss of Chris Winkelman. t e papers felt that the Raiders were
still in an emotional shock. The Raiders put their sorrow into dedication
to win the State Title.
Their first two opponents felt the dedication, as the Raiders exploded
to end the games early. The Raiders then went on to end five more games
early, including the first round of the Play-offs. In the second round of
the Play-offs, the Raiders avenged the last season loss to Bancroft-Ro-
salie with a 36-20 victory. The Raiders then meet up with Lewiston. Lew-
iston gave the Raiders a very good test, but they passed and earned a
spot in the Championship game. The Raiders then went on to prove their
dedication to win the State Title with a 58-36 victory over Ansley. The
Raiders still feel the pain of the loss of a teammate, but the State Champi-
onship helped ease some of the pain.
