Kay Blase was raised on the family farm where she grew up with a strong work ethic. She was on a detasseling corn crew for
more than 10 years, many as a straw boss and worked on a rouging crew during that time.
Kay is a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Polk, and taught Sunday School there for 25 years. She has
attended Women of Faith Conferences for 18 years.
Besides her faith, probably her greatest passion in life is her relationship with her niece Erin Blase. Erin has Cerebral Palsy and
the time that they spend together is a journey of love. Over the past 18 years Kay has accompanied Erin on a one-week road
trip each year to various locations around the state and surrounding states, including several recent stops at Mahoney State
Park. The two have attended Camp Harmon in California taking educational courses on the use of augmentative
communication. While at Camp Harmon they had the opportunity to visit such places as San Francisco, San Diego and
Disneyland. Kay took Erin to Berkeley University, she took classes to learn the Prentke-Romich talking systems, Delta Talker
and Pathfinder.
